The Board of Health is a 3-member volunteer board appointed by our Mayor who serve for a 3-year staggered term. The Board meets periodically with Health Department staff, creates health policy and regulations for the City, and holds hearings on matters of interest to the public and enforcement actions.
The Board is the policy-arm of public health in the City while the Health Department is the boots-on-the-ground of public health. Staff include the Health Agent, Public Health Nurse, and Administrative Assistant.
Complaints are accepted by mail, email, phone, or in person. We investigate all complaints within our jurisdiction. Anonymous complaints are also investigated. Messages left by phone must contain the street number of the property the complaint refers to.
We handle complaints regarding tenant housing, food illness, hoarders and excess clutter, smoking on City property, in retail businesses, and restaurants, poison ivy in public places, lead paint in housing, trash and illegal dumping, sales of tobacco to underage persons, unkempt private swimming pools, septic system failure, outdoor wood fired boilers, tattoo parlors, tanning salons, children’s camps, public and semi-public swimming pools, trash haulers, animal complaints such as chickens and bats, concerns about drinking well water, noise and odor nuisances, and general complaints about any business permitted by our office.
Bring them to the Safety Complex at 32 Payson Avenue 24/7. The Dispatcher will assist you. Syringes and lancets must be in an approved sharps container. This service is free of charge.
