The City Council is seeking to appoint a committee to review the city's ordinances.
The Home Rule Charter (Section 8-6) provides "for a review of all ordinances of the city for the purpose of determining if any amendment or revisions may be necessary or desirable."
On Wednesday, November 18, 2020, the City Council voted to establish an Ordinance Review Committee. This committee will be composed of 7 members, inlcuding up to 3 city councilors with the remaining members to be filled residents of Easthampton and/or subject matter experts with relevant experience in this area.
The purpose of the committee will be to review all Ordinances of the city with a focus on examining whether these ordinances further structural racism, intentional or not.
The committee will convene for one year and prepare a report, with recommendations, to the City Council. Periodic reports to the City Council throughout the year will be encouraged.
