Fire Department Awarded Federal Grant

Easthampton, MA – The Easthampton Fire Department was awarded a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) in the amount of $55,000 under the Fire Prevention & Safety program.  These funds will be used for the purchase and installation of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the city.  This has been an ongoing initiative that started three years ago when the department collaborated with the American Red Cross. Over the last three years, the department has installed over 350 smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in homes throughout the city.

In addition, these funds will be used to purchase a LED signboard that will be installed at the Public Safety Complex.   This will be used to help educate the public and provide fire safety related information as well as promote public safety events.

The Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) and support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to reduce injury and prevent death among high-risk populations.  This federal initiative supports the department’s vision of continuing our public outreach and education with these types of programs to help enhance the safety of the community.
